Cormorena (Core-more-ee-na) – The Gnomelands
The gnome and halfling settlements surrounding The Dwarfholds are collectively known as the Cormorena. The Cormorena have no unified government beyond locally elected Wardens, but they have never seemed to need one. The settlements in this area are located on the fertile foothills of the mountains, generally along the rivers that flow from the tall peaks. The foothills extend roughly fifty miles from the edge of the mountains proper, ending at the surrounding plains.
The gnomes have developed intricate irrigation systems to ease the burdens of agriculture, and the typical life of a Cormorenian is one of relative ease. The gnomes’ and halflings’ general lack of territorial ambition or desire to engage in the political affairs of either dwarves or humans has left them in relative peace for as long as can be remembered. Halflings excel at gardening and agriculture, while gnomes have a penchant for invention and trade. Often, the gnomes serve as middle-men between the dwarves and the outside world, collecting a nominal fee for travelling the few days of mountainous terrain and dealing with the potentially grumpy gate-dwarves. (Given that gnomes live longer than humans, they are able to form ‘friendly’ relations with the guards much easier than outsiders.)
