Empire of Galdarin
Empire of Galdarin (Gal-dar-in)
The Empire of Galdarin has been a fixture on the eastern edge of Khalathor for centuries. Founded in response to the Cantonite Empire in 237 CR, Galdarin began as a federation of independent states that banded together for common defence. To their west the Cantonites were expanding eastwards, and threats from the south and east faced the Galdarinians as well. Over time the federation transitioned into an empire, one with a long history of stability and relative prosperity. For many centuries the Cantonites and Galdarinians engaged in a number of border disputes, with all-out wars occurring in 301, 429, 598, 717, 853, 1099, 1114, 1178, and 1301 CR. The causes of war ranged over everything from disputes about religion and culture to economics and territory.
In 1666 CR disaster struck Galdarin: a powerful wizard named Alberec opened a gate to the abyss to strike a deal with a demon prince. However, Alberec was not prepared for what awaited him, and the gate was seized by hordes of demons which poured forth into the world. Galdarin was brought to the brink of utter destruction. Huge segments of the population have been killed or captured by the demons. The intervention and self-sacrifice of the archmage Jalreth closed the gate in 1689. It is a matter of interest that more demons did not come through the gate while it was open; while Galadarin was almost destroyed, sages ponder why the entire world was not overrun by demons. Some speculate that other cosmic events distracted the demon princes, but nobody has yet ventured into the Abyss to ask. The forces of Galdarin rallied, surviving in their castles and striking back against the demon armies. Some degree of normalcy has been re-established. Demons still skulk the land, and a darkness has crept its way to most corners of the Empire. Despite these events, trade has been struck up again between Galdarin and Khalathor. Galdarin’s misfortune has changed the political landscape of Khalathor, allowing room for Scintar to expand into a major regional power. It is unclear if Galadarin will have any designs on Khalathor once it has fully cleaned up its lands and recovered its strength, or if its near destruction will have a lasting effect on its people.
